Aloe Ferox has only recently made its entrance into the world market place. People get it mixed up with Aloe Vera which it is not. It is a uniquely South African Aloe, growing exclusively in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It grows naturally on the hills in semi-dessert conditions. It is not fertilized or treated with pesticides. The African Aloe is known as one of the most potent healing plants known to man.
The indigenous Cape Aloe Plant is found in abundance in the Mossel Bay - Albertinia area of the Cape Province and is known for the high concentration of bitters (aloin) which has been exported to Europe for many years.
Aloe Vera products are made of Aloe found in America, whereas the Aloe Ferox grows indigenously in South Africa. Aloe Ferox contains two principle ingredients, namely aloe bitters (not readily available from Aloe Vera) and the white inner fleshy part of the leaf.
Making use of the natural healing properties found in plants is a worldwide phenomena. One of these plants has been part of the traditional healing practicess of KhoiSan peoples of Southern Africa for centuries and is found only in the Cape Province of South Africa. It's name is known for its superior antiseptic, cleansing, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. Aloe gel drains from the leaf of the plant when cut. This forms the base for the Aloe Ferox products.
One of the most wonderful things about the Aloe Ferox aloe is that it is harvested directly from the wild in its natural state. This ensures that plants have not been treated with pesticides, fertilizers, or any chemical additiives and are absolutely pure and organically grown. There is more than enough of the renewable resource to ensure that it does not need to be cultivated. It is a robust aloe that grows to over 2m high. Seven to eight leaves are harvested from the bottom of each plant each year without damaging the growth tip of this spiky, succulent plant. This harvesting method has the advantage that harvesting can be done in the wild without doing any damage to the plants.
These harvested leaves are then packed in a circle around a plastic-lined hollow in the ground to allow the dark bitter sap to tap naturally from between the green peel and the white jelly of the leaf in an age old method. This bitter substance is slowly boiled and reduced , so that it hardens to a crystal when cooked. Traditionally the bitters are used for its laxative, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic qualities. The rest of the leaf is then taken back to the factory and processed into juice and jelly which is used in a wide variety of creams, lotions, health and beauty products. The affordability of the beauty range together with the wonderful anti-aging qualities of the aloe have made this into a rapidly expanding industry.
